Reverse Osmosis
The popularity of reverse osmosis as the preferred method of water filtration has rocketed as the prolifertaion of water bottling companies has increased. Reverse Osmosis is the the consistant cure all of water purification and for very good reason.
Reverse Osmosis membranes purify to 1/1000 000th of a mm and remove almost every contaminant that exists the few that remain are removed with a combination of pre-filters and resins to give absolutely pure water as can be seen on the chart below .
Clearly if finances permit then Reverse Osmosis Water Filtration is the answer !
But is it such a clear cut answer ? Well maybe but there are downsides to R.O . For one the amount of water required to keep the very fine membrane operational can be substantial. In domestic revrese osmosis systems this can run as much as 3 : 1 . Three times the amount of wastage to 1 part product or pure water processed
Bearing in mind that the average household of 4 people only consumes 20 liters per day including water used for meal preparations, coffee , teas and beverages. That figure is hardly going to affect the water consumption bill, besides the waste water can be used on the garden if necessary. The water produced by a reverse osmosis system is very good, light and easy to drink
These days domestic reverse osmosis systems are inexpensive and in the region of R2200, down substantially from 2 years ago where prices were double or even triple the cost of what theya re today.
Reverse Osmosis systems are rated according to the amount of water that they can produce ie 50 gpd, 100 gpd, 125 gpd and 300 gpd for High Flow Tankless Systems . Why the industry insists in rating these systems according to the non metric system is laughable but the conversion is easy.
At 25 deg Celsius water temperature and at a water pressure of 4-5 bars pressure a domestic unit will recover 30% of the water flowing through it at a 98% chemical salt rejection of the feed water quality . 1 Gallon = 3.785 liters and production is calculated over a 24 hr period
So if you are in city such as Johannesburg where the water quality is 120 ppm a 98% rejection ration will give you water of 2.4 ppm or mg/l . To put this in context, rain water runs at around 8 ppm while pure aquafer water runs at around 40 ppm, so that reading is very good water indeed.
Systems are supplied with booster pumps if the feed water pressure is below 3 bars of pressure and if you are using the reverse osmosis system in a situation where you need a constant production rate I would highly recommend you get the system with the booster. Current price is only R1850 as at 12 Dec 2011, excluding delivery and installation.
Replacement Filters for the Reverse Osmosis Systems
The filter cartridges that a reverse osmosis uses are the 1 or 5 Micron sediment filters which should be changed every 6 months , the activated carbon filter and the carbon block pre-filter. The membrane can last 3-5 years and the post carbon taste & odour removal filter will last 12-18 months under normal water quality and use.

Do You Want a Consistently Effective Purification System for Your Family ?
Why Settle for 2nd Best ?
The major Water Bottlers Use reverse Osmosis for Consistently Purity – You Should Too

This system has a booster pump which maximises the pressure going to the Membrane ensuring the correct volume of output.
Ideal if your incoming water pressure is low between 0.5 Bars and 2.2 or if you want a specific volume output per day such as those people running a small coffee shop or beverage outlet. This unit is capable of 285 liters of Pure Water per Day at 25 deg Celsius
Reverse Osmosis systems produce the best results when the water temeperature is 25 Deg C , 0 Chlorine in the water and most of the impurities removed. This is exactly what the 3 pre-filters do…
Filter 1 – 5 Micron Sediment Filter
Removes large sedimentation above 5 Microns such as dirt, leaves, sand, mud, stuff that flakes off in the water pipes etc
Lifecycle : 3-6 Months . Replacement cost from us R18.00 Needs to be checked and replaced as required. Check regularly please.
After 12 Months Use – Left far too long –>
The center core must always remain white to cream in colour
Filter 2- Activated Carbon Water Filter
removes chlorine, general pesticides, herbicides and some water discolouration. This is the same material ( but in liquid form ) that hospitals use to save kids who have swallowed poisons – its super effective. The real workhorse of most filter systems . Lifecycle : 12 Months . Replacement Cost from us just R42.00
For those that live in the Western Cape – Tannin or dark water is a huge problem and it is imperative that you check your filters regularly. The filters below were removed from a clients system after just 6 weeks use in a home R.O System in Grabouw

The muck that has congealed on these filters is the ineraction between the chemicals the Municipality uses in that area to remove sedimentation, called a flocculent and the natural tannin which is a byproduct of the water run-off from the Fynbos in the area. The filter in the middle is the sediment filter
Filter 3 – CTO Carbon Block Water Filter
This is an extremely fine powdered version of the activated carbon condensed into a solid block. Carbon adsorbs the detris in the water by storing it in the fine fissures that are created during the heating process in manufacture. The Carbon Block is said to have the equivalent of 5 Tennis courts of fine fissures – thats a huge capability and REALLY cleans the water it receives from the Activated Carbon filter. Removes colour, bad smells, odours , herbicide & pesticide residuals , some heavy metals Lifecycle : 12 Months . Replacement Cost from us just R42.00
The Reverse Osmosis Membrane
Designed initially for use on US submarines and later for the Space Missions to purify waste water ,but later changed into a smaller form for the domestic and commercial markets . These membranes remove 98% of all impurities larger than 1/1000 000th of a mm . Thats seriously tiny !!!!!
That means if your incoming water has chemical salts measured at 100 ppm then your output water will have a reading of 2 ppm. Natural water from lakes runs at around 40ppm. By the same token if you live near Struisbaai in the Cape your TDS of your water ranges around 2000 ppm then your output water reading will be around 40 ppm. Not all water is the same quality but with REVERSE OSMOSIS you get the purest water available
Lifecycle: 3-5 Years depending on incoming water quality and how well you maintain the service cycle.
Available in 50, 75& 100 GPD ( Gallons per day ) Multiply x 3.785 for the equivalent Liters ie 190 L , 285 L & 379 L per day at water temp of 25 deg C at 4 bar pressure
Filter 5 – Post Carbon Taste and Odour Coconut
Made of extremely high grade coconut palms of Malaysia this filter material removes any residual tastes and odours and sweetens the water making it easy to drink, light and refreshing
Lifecycle: 18 Months - Replacement Cost from us R65.00

This is a Great System, High Quality, Excellent Value with Consistent Purety output . The unit is supplied with a 12 l pressurised tank to ensure water from the faucet runs quickly Chrome plated brass faucet, spanner to remove housing for maintenance.
