Water Filters – Do We Need Them ?
WATER CONTAMINATION WARNING ! WATER CONTAMINATION WARNING !
“More than 60% of all municipalities in South Africa cannot be sure that they are supplying water of the necessary high quality standards”
Extract from an article appearing in the local newspaper Die Burger 20 May 2005 and not much has improved at the end of 2011 , 6 years on and more pollution and bad news.
Scary as it may be, here in late 2011, not much has changed in the Drinking Water scenario. Daily News Headlines advertise disaster after disaster. Power Failures make the drinking water problem worse . Filtration plants go offline as the Power fails yet water still flows to the residents.Sewerage is dumped into rivers . Complaints fall on deaf ears .
Not a week goes by without enquiries from frustrated people about problems with their drinking water supply or boreholes that have been drilled only to find that the water is so atrocious that it cannot be used in any form at all.
The South Western Cape from the Coast to 200 km’s inland suffers from the acidic effects of the Fynbos that is prevalent in this area. Run-off in high rainfall periods brings this incredibly acidic run-off that is the colour of dark tea.
Washing clothes becomes a frustrating chore, boil and bleach to rid the clothes of the stains from the Humic Acids which come from the plant materials. Tannins have become a swear word and that is just the start. The corrossive nature of the water is a huge drain on home owners and municipalities alike as the water corrodes everything in it’s way. Costing thousands per year as we have to replace kettles, geysers and heating systems.
In Guateng Acid Mine Drainage has turned the water aquafers that supply the region into a nuclear waste dump thanks to mine mismanagement and pollution on epic levels. 15 billion liters of water is rising to the surface contaminated with Uranium and numerous other neuclear pollutants and it has nowhere to go . Johannesburg water is about to be swamped in this muck.
Solutions are expensive in the main and carefully guarded by the Water Solution companies which have become a huge growth sector in South Africa thanks to our weak infrastructure , lack of political will and shoddy enforcement of water policies.
